To upgrade to Kubuntu 17.10 from 17.04: Detailed instructions with screenshots can be found here: Kubuntu 17.04 to 17.10 Upgrade Or brief instructions are below: - Open Discover or optionally Muon Package Manager - Ensure that your current system is up to date by installing available updates If for some reason Discover does not then offer you the upgrade to 17.10, but you know it is available, you can do one of the following: - Launch the graphical release upgrade by opening Krunner, or Konsole (or other terminal), and run: A bug in the Linux 4.13 kernel shipped in Kubuntu (and Ubuntu and other flavours) 17.10 can leave users unable to update any of their BIOS settings, including their system’s boot order, after booting this version of Ubuntu.

A kernel with a fix for this issue will be available in zesty-updates shortly, but, the Kubuntu 17.10 installer images still contain the kernel with this bug.

I'll go with a fresh install when I got the time again.

Folder view is now the default setting for the Plasma Desktop for new installations and new user accounts.Plasma 5, the new generation of KDE's desktop has been developed to make it smoother to use while retaining the familiar setup. The latest bugfix release 5.10.5 of the Plasma 5.10 series is the default in this version of Kubuntu. After all this, I'll probably never use the upgrade function again and always do a fresh install. It probably would have been less stressful and a lot faster.
